I am so excited to tell you about A Mother's Secret by Amy Clipston! In this book, an unwed Amish woman yearns for real love and a family. While she has never been married, she has a fifteen year old son, Benjamin. In a community with strict standards and a long memory, Carolyn knows she might never find a man who will have her and her son. Carolyn’s family tries to marry her off to a widower with a daughter who needs a mother. A marriage of convenience doesn’t sound so bad, yet despite her loneliness, Carolyn knows what she really wants: a traditional Amish family and to marry for love.
I got wrapped up in the story almost instantly. Carolyn’s son, Benjamin, gets blamed for something his cousins did. To teach him about taking responsibility for his actions, he is forced to work off his debt. My heart broke as I read about Benjamin. He got blamed for something he did not do and most of his family refused to believe him. While Carolyn became pregnant with Benjamin before she was baptized, she still feels the judgment from her actions. Benjamin begins to feel like he is causing his mother heartache. I became so wrapped up in this story and I felt the pain of the characters.
Joshua, the Amish man Benjamin is working for, is not married and his mother is not happy about that. She is set to get him married, but to the girl she wants. Joshua is wrapped up in his job and is not ready to settle down and get married. His mother tries to get Lena and Joshua together. The more I read about Joshua’s mother, the more frustrated I became with her.
I really did not want to put this book down and I was engrossed in the whole story line. Amy delivered a great read that was different from many of the other books I read and provided me with an engaging storyline and character depth that I thoroughly enjoyed. After reading A Mother's Secret, I can not wait to read A Dream of Home which is currently scheduled to release in November.
